The H-mini growing system is versatile, and can be used for:
- Hydroponics
- Propagating
- Microgreens
This guide explains how to grow microgreens. If you have a double-level H-mini, microgreens work just as well on either or both levels.
How to grow microgreens in the H-mini
Microgreens are a great way to get nutrients and a fresh dose of flavour in your salads, and they grow really quickly too. To grow microgreens, you'll need:
- Trays. Half seed trays come supplied with the H-mini, two of which will fit into the water tray provided.
- A growing medium. We recommend coir compost, available in our shop here.
- Seeds. Any microgreens seeds will work just fine.
Start off by soaking your coir compost in water and breaking it up. You'll only need a small amount for each microgreens tray, so a 15 litre block will last a long time. Don't make it too wet. It should still be a loose powder, but not dusty.
Spread 5mm (1/4") of compost in the bottom of a half seed tray.
Sprinkle half a packet of microgreens seeds eveny across the tray.
Use another tray to press the seeds firmly into the compost.
Soak the tray briefly in water to get the compost nice and wet.
Leave the top tray in place (to keep the humidity in and the light out), then put it in a warm place to germinate. The H-mini itself is fine, but if you are running a constant cropping of microgreens, you may have your H-mini full. This is where an extra level for the H-mini comes in handy.
When the seeds have germinated and started to grow (as soon as you see leaves), take the upper tray off and put the seedlings into the H-mini.
Keep an eye on the coir and don't let it dry out. A half cup of water per day can keep it damp. There's no need to add nutrients to the water; everything the seedling needs is in the seed itself. Magic!
Harvst after about a week, by cutting the sprouts off right at the base. Discard the coir with roots in the compost.
